Nelson’s Camera x Sony Mural

Nelson’s Photo and Video is San Diego’s oldest camera shop; serving the photography community since 1950. To celebrate and promote the Sony cameras at this historic shop, Sony commissioned a mural to be put on the shop’s roll-door. Teaming up with Art Director, Eric Walters, he worked to provide the initial concept sketch, then I came in to illustrate and prove out the look and feel.

Inspired by a Sony-fied take on iconic San Diego elements, this celebratory mural came to life. It’s almost like a search and find of San Diego; zoom in to find nods to Oceanside pier, North Park’s water tower, downtown SD, In-N-Out, and palm trees galore. Our color palette was led by Sony’s cinnabar orange as a base, contrasting greens and blues added in for visual interest, and analogous colors of vibrant pink, light orange, and light yellow added in as supporting players. I loved playing around in this flat, thin linework world, and pushing character design to get a little wild and weird (check out that seal!)
